Lack of Credible Railroad and Lack of Supplies (URL)
The Confederates lacked an effective railroad system that, as seen from this diary entry, made traveling very long and strenuous as this particular "journey was miserable" and "consumed thirty hours." The North had a vast railroad system that made traveling to and from much easier as well as transporting supplies. It is also evident that the South had a limit in resources that made surviving off of the battle field a battle within itself. Trying to win two wars was not plausible for the Confederates and the course of history told that story.
